Are you wondering what the Bible really says about divorce?

Before making one of life's biggest decisions, it's important to seek God's wisdom rather than relying only on emotions or cultural advice.

In this episode of The Sunshine Why Show, Lindsay Brown opens Scripture to examine Jesus' teaching on marriage, covenant, faithfulness, and divorce. You'll hear a powerful real-life testimony of a Sunshine Why coaching client whose marriage was restored just days before her divorce became final, proving that God can still work when a situation seems beyond hope.

This episode is not about guilt or condemnation. It's about slowing down, seeking the Lord, and allowing His Word—not fear, frustration, or social media—to shape your decisions. Whether your marriage is struggling, you're considering separation, or you simply want to understand God's design for marriage more deeply, this conversation offers biblical encouragement, wisdom, and hope.

Scriptures Discussed:

  •  Matthew 19:3–9
  •  Matthew 19:6
  •  James 1:19

Before You Divorce, Read What Jesus Actually Says

The Sunshine Why Show with Lindsay Brown

Lindsay Brown:

If you're thinking about divorce, this episode isn't here to shame you. It's not here to pressure you, and it's certainly not here to ignore the pain you may be carrying.

But before you make one of the biggest decisions of your life, can I ask you one question?

Have you searched the Scriptures as carefully as you've searched your feelings?

Because feelings can tell us you're hurting. They can tell us you're disappointed. They can tell us you're exhausted. But feelings don't always tell us what is holy.

Culture asks, "Are you still happy?"

God asks, "Are you still faithful?"

Those are not the same question.

So before you make a permanent decision, let's hear what Jesus actually said.

You're listening to The Sunshine Why Show with Lindsay Brown.

Hey, Sunshine! Welcome back to The Sunshine Why Show, the official podcast of the Sunshine Why Movement. I'm your host, Lindsay Brown, and around here we teach women how to stop misbehaving in relationships, communicate with clarity, embrace their femininity, and walk in their God-given worth.

We're growing up, glowing up, and letting go of the chaos we've been chasing.

So grab your journal, find a cozy spot, and let's get into it.

Marriage was God's idea before it was ours.

One of the greatest mistakes our culture has made is treating marriage like a contract when God calls it a covenant.

Contracts are based on mutual benefit.

Covenants are based on faithfulness.

That's why Jesus didn't begin His teaching on divorce by talking about legal paperwork. He began by reminding people what marriage was created to be.

Matthew 19:6 says:

"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

Notice Jesus doesn't say, "What compatible people have joined together," or, "What two happy people have joined together."

He says, "What God has joined together."

Marriage belongs to Him.

Which means before we ask whether we're finished with our marriage, we should first ask:

What has God said?

Now catch this.

We've reached a point where people spend more time researching a new vehicle than researching what Jesus said before ending a marriage.

We'll ask our girlfriends.

We'll ask social media.

We'll ask strangers online.

But have we opened our Bible?

I want to share something I'll never forget—a testimony that changed me.

I had the privilege of coaching a woman in our Sunshine Why community whose marriage looked completely over.

The divorce papers had already been filed.

The court date had already been scheduled.

Everything pointed toward the end.

In fact, they were only days away from the judge signing the final divorce decree.

From the outside, it looked irreversible.

But God wasn't finished writing their story.

Something began to change—not overnight and not magically.

God started softening hearts.

Conversations happened that hadn't happened in years.

Humility replaced pride.

Prayer replaced panic.

Both husband and wife became willing to let God work before the court finalized what they believed had to end.

Just days before the divorce became official, they reconciled.

Later, she told me something that still gives me chills.

She said,

"That verse—'What God has joined together, let no one separate'—became real in our lives."

Now, that testimony is not a promise that every marriage will be restored.

Some marriages involve ongoing abuse.

Some involve unrepentant adultery.

Some involve circumstances where separation is necessary for safety and wisdom.

This isn't about pretending those realities don't exist.

But it is a reminder that if God is still working, don't assume you've reached the last chapter.

Don't let the calendar convince you God is out of time.

Don't let legal paperwork convince you God can't soften hearts.

As long as there's breath, there is room for repentance.

There is room for healing.

There is room for God to do what only He can do.

Sometimes we're ready to close the book while God is still writing another chapter.

Now let's ask the question every woman should consider before making a permanent decision:

Are you following wisdom, or are you simply looking for relief?

Let's be honest.

Marriage can be hard.

You can feel lonely while lying beside someone every night.

You can feel unseen.

Unheard.

Unappreciated.

Those feelings are real.

But here's what we have to ask ourselves:

Am I responding to pain, or am I pursuing wisdom?

Pain is a signal.

It tells us something needs attention.

But pain isn't always meant to be the steering wheel.

Don't hand your future over to your emotions.

Invite the Holy Spirit into your emotions.

Trying to fix loneliness by ending your marriage can sometimes be like selling your house because the plumbing leaks.

The problem is real.

But it doesn't automatically mean the entire house needs to be demolished.

Before you make one of life's biggest decisions, ask yourself these questions:

1. What has God actually said?

Not culture.

Not social media.

Not your favorite influencer.

Open your Bible.

Read Matthew 19.

Read 1 Corinthians 7.

Study God's Word before making a life-altering decision.

2. Have I communicated clearly?

Not hinted.

Not withdrawn.

Not expected him to read my mind.

Have I spoken truth with grace?

3. Have we pursued biblical help?

Prayer.

Counseling.

Pastoral wisdom.

Repentance.

Forgiveness.

Community.

Don't let divorce become the first serious solution you've pursued.

4. Am I imagining a future that may not exist?

This is where so many people stumble.

They picture freedom.

Peace.

A fresh start.

Sometimes that's exactly what follows.

But sometimes the grass isn't greener.

It's just different.

Different financial pressures.

Different holidays.

Different parenting schedules.

Different loneliness.

Here's what I've learned:

The grass isn't always greener.

Sometimes you're standing in another field wishing you'd watered the one God gave you.

Let me say the quiet part with love.

Freedom without God's direction isn't freedom.

It's simply another form of wandering.

Communication Coaching Moment

What Sunshine might say:

"I'm done. Nothing ever changes."

What she should say:

"I love our marriage enough to fight for healing before I make a decision I can't easily undo. Will you fight with me?"

Biblical Truth

James 1:19 reminds us:

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

And Matthew 19:6 reminds us:

"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

Mirror Moment

Sunshine, sit with these questions before the Lord.

Am I asking God for wisdom, or simply asking Him to remove my discomfort?

Have I truly surrendered this marriage to Him?

Have I pursued every biblical avenue toward healing that is appropriate and safe?

If Jesus were sitting across from me today, would I be willing to let Him challenge my thinking before I made this decision?

This episode isn't about guilt.

It's about wisdom.

It's about remembering that marriage isn't held together by butterflies.

It's sustained by covenant.

Repentance.

True forgiveness.

Grace.

And the power of God.

If you're in a dangerous or abusive situation, seek safety and wise, godly counsel.

Protecting yourself from harm is not the same as pretending harm doesn't exist.

But if you're simply exhausted, discouraged, and wondering whether divorce will finally bring peace, slow down.

Open your Bible.

Seek the Lord.

Invite wise counsel.

Don't let culture make this decision for you.

Don't let social media make this decision for you.

And don't let your emotions make this decision either.

Let Jesus have the loudest voice.

Because He loves you.

He loves marriage.

And He will always lead you toward truth.

If today's conversation encouraged you, share it with a woman who needs biblical wisdom before making a life-changing decision.

You won't want to miss it.
